January 18, 2017
I’m not one for making New Year resolutions these days, as in the past I’ve never kept them, but this January 1st I decided that I really must improve my fitness level. You would think that living on a farm would automatically make me fit, but actually I spend most of my time indoors at the computer, or sitting spinning and weaving.
A walk up Pen Tir hill behind the farm brought my lack of fitness home to me. It’s a bit of a tradition for Brian and me to walk to the top of the hill over Christmas and take in the wonderful views across to the Black Mountains on one side and Llangorse Lake to the other. But this year I failed to get to the top, I was so out of breath. So my plan is to do more walking, starting with walking up the lane to the farm at least twice a week. It’s a mile and a half and uphill all the way, with a steep pitch near the start and just before the farm.
So far I’ve kept to my resolution, and yesterday I didn’t even have to stop for a breather at the top of the steepest parts, so I’m feeling rather pleased with myself. Now I’m thinking that I can either make the walk longer, or add in some running!
The first snowfall of 2017 was fairly light, but accompanied by a nasty northwesterly gale, which isn’t apparent from the photo. (I gave the walk a miss that day!) Whatever the weather here, it’s so beautiful.
