Braids and bands

The autumn is always the time of year when I treat myself to a course or two, to learn new skills either in my own fields of spinning and weaving, or something entirely new.
This year I was fortunate to take a two day course with Susan Foulkes who is the undisputed expert on Baltic band weaving. And she is a jolly nice person as well! I first met Susan at the Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers Summer School in 2015 where she was running a week long course in one of the classrooms down the corridor from the“Design for the Terrified” course. At the end of Summer School we had the chance to go round all the classrooms and see what other students had been learning during the week. I was enchanted by the Baltic bands and decided that I would get in touch with Susan to see if she would come to the Crickhowell Guild of WSD to run a course for us. Well, three years later everything finally fell into place and we spent a weekend in September with Susan’s tutelage. I am absolutely hooked - I love weaving these bands just as much as I thought I would. They remind me so much of the folk costume worn by my German relatives when I was a child and it brings back very many happy memories. Here are a couple of photos to give you the gist ...
